Strategic Initiatives | Leichtag Foundation

Underpinning the Leichtag Foundation’s grantmaking strategies is a strong base of research and a deep commitment to developing talent and institutional sustainability in the social sector. The Foundation views its strategies holistically, employing a broad range of tools beyond check writing, to achieve impact. One of the primary tools is leveraged philanthropy, that is, working with other funders supporting the Foundation’s strategic impact areas.

In seeking opportunities for philanthropic leverage and multiple bottom lines of impact, the Foundation has launched programs; secured, managed and stewarded funder consortiums; conceived, developed and overseen field building efforts, and incubated new initiatives and organizations. Each effort responded to learning through grantmaking, community research, and work with practitioners, and partnerships with other funders.

The Murray Galinson San Diego-Israel Initiative
The Murray Galinson San Diego-Israel Initiative strategically promotes, supports and catalyzes knowledge discourse on the modern state of Israel through scholarship, engagement and collaboration. Components include academic courses, lectures, Israel travel for students and faculty, visiting Israeli professors, conferences, and community education opportunities. Programming takes place on San Diego campuses, including UC San Diego, San Diego State University, CSU San Marcos, University of San Diego, and Cal Western School of Law. Learn more here.

Jerusalem Philanthropic Initiatives
The Jerusalem Philanthropic Initiatives advances civil society and philanthropy in Jerusalem. Through efforts including the Jerusalem Model, JPI will work with civil society organizations, partner funders and other stakeholders to develop more Jerusalem-based programming, work with organizational leaders to develop their capacity, forge new cross-sector partnerships, and curate immersive experiences in Jerusalem. JPI aims to pivot Jerusalem strategy and magnify impact in the realms of social cohesion, diversity and inclusion and transformational change.
Jerusalem Model
Jerusalem Model includes a coalition of over 200 innovative and forward-thinking Jerusalemite social entrepreneurs who work to develop civil society and build a better future for the City’s diverse inhabitants. Based on the belief that diversity is Jerusalem’s competitive advantage, participants include Palestinian Muslims and Christians, Ultra-Orthodox and secular Jews, Ethiopian Israelis, members of the LGBTQ community and others. Through conferences, incentive funding, events and other activities, the Model provides professional development to build skills for its members and resilience to influence decision makers.
