Honoring the legacy of Lee and Toni Leichtag through igniting and inspiring vibrant Jewish life, advancing self-sufficiency and stimulating social entrepreneurship in coastal North San Diego County and Jerusalem
Engagement, building relationships
and aligning interests
Leichtag Foundation is committed to deepening, rather than solely broadening, our impact.
We are a local Foundation, supporting organizations and movements in two locales: North San Diego County Coastal Region and Jerusalem. The Foundation does not accept unsolicited grant applications or proposals for funding. Potential grantees are formally invited to work with Foundation staff in preparing grant materials for proposal development and Board review. The Board relies upon staff to reach out to organizations to invite proposals and to manage the grantmaking process. If you are working with a Board member to submit a proposal, please contact a member of the Foundation’s staff at firstname.lastname@example.org.
As a learning foundation, we work continuously to identify potential grant applicants through due diligence procedures and will request proposals from a limited number of organizations that fall within the four focus areas. This applies to both the Expedited Grants Program and for grants over $50,000.
For additional information about our strategies, please carefully review the Foundation’s Strategic Focus Areas by clicking above.
We believe strongly in the critical importance of using all the Foundation’s resources, not just direct funding, to advance our strategic focus areas and seek impact. This is one of our most closely-held principles inspired by our spend-down ethos and strengthened and underscored in the impact we have seen from using these strategies.
As part of the strategic planning process, a set of tools was created of which direct funding is just one component. These are:
Awarding grants to meet short and long term needs.
Advocating for systemic change.
Convening and facilitating partnerships.
Convening knowledge sharing summits and gatherings and commissioning research to deepen and advance the field’s knowledge.
Inspiring funding partners and successors.
Improving grantee capacity to fundraise.
Pursuing mission-related investing.
Developing young leaders and philanthropists.
Forging connections between strategic areas, particularly between our work in San Diego and our work in Jerusalem.
Strengthening grantee infrastructure.
Providing a physical platform through Leichtag Commons.
We seek to build fields as well as fund individual programs.
To that end, the Foundation:
Actively provides a neutral space for nonprofit partners to convene in order to build collaboration and advocate for common issues; and pursues systemic change through research and education.
Underpinning the Foundation’s strategic initiatives is a strong base of research and a deep commitment to developing talent and institutional sustainability in the social sector. The Foundation views its strategies holistically, employing a broad range of tools including advocating for systemic change, convening partnerships, strengthening grantee capacity, developing talent, and forging connections between strategic areas to achieve impact. One of the primary tools is leverage: helping grantees find the resources required to thrive, plan for a viable future, and continue serving the community as relevant needs persist.
