SUMMARY:Shushan on the Farm: A Theatrical Retelling of the Purim Story
DESCRIPTION:Join The Hive\, Coastal Roots Farm\, and Lipinsky Family San Diego Jewish Arts Festival for an experiential theatrical walking tour through the city of Shushan – filled with live dance\, music\, and merriment as we bring the ancient voices of the Purim story to life. Don’t miss an entertaining afternoon\, including original performances from San Diego Ballet and vignettes curated by the San Diego Repertory Theatre! \nThis year will feature two show options – our first show is oriented for anyone age 8 years and up. Our second show offers the same content as the first show\, but the pre and post-show experience is designed to appeal to adults. Audience costumes for all ages are welcomed and encouraged! \nTickets are $18/person and kids (18 and under) are free. Please reach out to paige@thehivesd.org if ticket pricing is prohibiting your attendance. Scholarships are available. \n*All reception refreshments are Kosher. \nFAQs: \n\nWhat is Purim?\n\nPurim is a joyous holiday that affirms and celebrates Jewish survival and continuity throughout history. Traditionally\, Purim is celebrated by reading the Book of Esther (m’gillat Esther) which tells the story of the holiday. Our story begins in Shushan\, an ancient city in Persia\, now Iran\, 160 miles from the Tigris River. Under the rule of King Ahashverosh\, Haman\, the king’s adviser\, plots to exterminate all of the Jews of Persia. His plan is foiled by Queen Esther and her cousin Mordechai\, who ultimately save the Jews of Persia from destruction. The reading of the Purim story is often a raucous environment with cheers and boos and lots of celebrating. We have reinvented the telling of the Purim story through a series of performances that you will experience in a lively walking tour setting.\n\n\nHow long is the program?\n\nYou should plan on the designed experiences taking approximately 50 minutes from the time of your scheduled arrival. A post-show gathering is available for those who would like to stay after each performance.\n\n\nWhat do I need to bring and what should I leave at home?\n\nWe encourage you to wear a good pair of walking shoes as we will be experiencing Shushan by foot. Guests will be walking on concrete\, dirt\, and/or mulch\, so flat shoes are reccomended. Accommodations can be made for those who are not able to walk for the entirety of the experience. Due to the organic status of our farm\, no animals are allowed on the property.\n\n\nIs the program appropriate for children?\n\nWhile there is not any inappropriate content in the experience\, the theatrical dialogue was created for adults and older kids. However\, our earlier show will have a more kid-centric feel with activities along the way! We recommend the early show to kids 8+. Please feel free to reach out with any specific questions.\n\n\nWhat should I expect at the reception?\n\nWe hope you stay after the show to partake in the merriment of Purim; which will include\, drinks\, appetizers\, and activities! Costumes are encouraged!\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:Celebrating 10 Years of Growth at Leichtag Commons
DESCRIPTION:December 20\, 2022 marked ten years since Leichtag Foundation closed escrow on the former Ecke Ranch\, now Leichtag Commons. \nA few weeks after we took ownership of the property in 2012\, we gathered some who had been most important to the acquisition decision at our first Tu B’Shvat\, where we put shovel to the ground\, marking our first planting as well as our hopes and dreams for the future. \nThis year\, we again gather those who joined us then and those who have been closest to the community impact that we could have only dreamed of back in those early days of 2013. We will reflect and look forward—planting again\, dreaming of a future from strength to strength. We will also take the opportunity to remember those who were most dear to us who we have lost in the last decade\, especially:\nNaomi Rabkin z”l\nMurray Galinson z”l\nSheldon “Shep” Scharlin z”l\nAnd of course\nMax “Lee” Leichtag z”l and Andre “Toni” Leichtag z”l\nJoli Ann Leichtag z”l \nYou have been instrumental in shaping Leichtag Commons into a home for Jewish experiences\, social entrepreneurship\, experimentation\, community impact\, and deep connection with land. \nWe hope you’ll join us to celebrate and look eagerly forward together. \nOur reception immediately follows Coastal Roots Farm’s Food Forest Festival. We hope you will enjoy the Food Forest Festival with us as part of attending our 10 Year celebration! Learn more about the Food Forest Festival here.

SUMMARY:Beyond the Count
DESCRIPTION:JPro San Diego invites you to join Ilana Kaufman\, Executive Director and Arya Marvazy\, Senior Director of Programs of the Jews of Color Initiative in a presentation of their critical research “Beyond the Count: Perspectives and Lived Experiences of Jews of Color.” The Jews of Color Initiative works to build a truly multiracial\, anti-racist Jewish community in which Jews of Color can experience joy and reach their full potential and belonging as leaders and community members. \nThis report uses survey and interview data of a complex fabric of JoC identities\, lived experiences\, and perspectives. In the context of the national conversation about race in the United States\, this study enhances American Jews’ understanding of their own racial and ethnic diversity and provides an opportunity to reflect on how systems of inequality are perpetuated in our own community. We look forward to engaging in a robust conversation about the key takeaways and implications for own San Diego Jewish Community. \n\n\nThere will be an opportunity to attend both in-person or via Zoom. For those attending in-person\, there is an optional lunch after the program – a vegan Green Goddess Bowl for $10.\n\n\nMeet Our Presenters: \n\nIlana Kaufman (she/her) is the Executive Director of the Jews of Color Initiative.
