Purim 2023: Why do we donate on Purim?

While Purim is a lively celebration, it is also a holiday that spreads kindness to others through giving. Read on to discover why we donate on Purim.

Purim is a day for celebrating how much kindness we can give to others. In fact, on Purim we are obligated to give two forms of gifts. The first is Matanot L’evyonim (gifts to the poor). The second is Mishloach Manot, which is Hebrew for “sending of portions.” Mishloach Manot are gifts of food given to family, friends and community members.

To honor the practice of Mishloach Manot and its intention, we’re uplifting trusted partner organizations that serve the most vulnerable in our communities.

We encourage contributions of funds directly to these organizations. Nonprofits that distribute food and goods to their client bases can source exactly the items they need when they need them, reducing wasted food and getting more product for each dollar. Nonprofits can purchase food at wholesale prices and through direct channels, so donations of money can feed many times more families than buying non-perishables at retail.
