SUMMARY:Shushan on the Farm: A Theatrical Retelling of the Purim Story
DESCRIPTION:Join The Hive\, Coastal Roots Farm\, and Lipinsky Family San Diego Jewish Arts Festival for an experiential theatrical walking tour through the city of Shushan – filled with live dance\, music\, and merriment as we bring the ancient voices of the Purim story to life. Don’t miss an entertaining afternoon\, including original performances from San Diego Ballet and vignettes curated by the San Diego Repertory Theatre! \nThis year will feature two show options – our first show is oriented for anyone age 8 years and up. Our second show offers the same content as the first show\, but the pre and post-show experience is designed to appeal to adults. Audience costumes for all ages are welcomed and encouraged! \nTickets are $18/person and kids (18 and under) are free. Please reach out to paige@thehivesd.org if ticket pricing is prohibiting your attendance. Scholarships are available. \n*All reception refreshments are Kosher. \nFAQs: \n\nWhat is Purim?\n\nPurim is a joyous holiday that affirms and celebrates Jewish survival and continuity throughout history. Traditionally\, Purim is celebrated by reading the Book of Esther (m’gillat Esther) which tells the story of the holiday. Our story begins in Shushan\, an ancient city in Persia\, now Iran\, 160 miles from the Tigris River. Under the rule of King Ahashverosh\, Haman\, the king’s adviser\, plots to exterminate all of the Jews of Persia. His plan is foiled by Queen Esther and her cousin Mordechai\, who ultimately save the Jews of Persia from destruction. The reading of the Purim story is often a raucous environment with cheers and boos and lots of celebrating. We have reinvented the telling of the Purim story through a series of performances that you will experience in a lively walking tour setting.\n\n\nHow long is the program?\n\nYou should plan on the designed experiences taking approximately 50 minutes from the time of your scheduled arrival. A post-show gathering is available for those who would like to stay after each performance.\n\n\nWhat do I need to bring and what should I leave at home?\n\nWe encourage you to wear a good pair of walking shoes as we will be experiencing Shushan by foot. Guests will be walking on concrete\, dirt\, and/or mulch\, so flat shoes are reccomended. Accommodations can be made for those who are not able to walk for the entirety of the experience. Due to the organic status of our farm\, no animals are allowed on the property.\n\n\nIs the program appropriate for children?\n\nWhile there is not any inappropriate content in the experience\, the theatrical dialogue was created for adults and older kids. However\, our earlier show will have a more kid-centric feel with activities along the way! We recommend the early show to kids 8+. Please feel free to reach out with any specific questions.\n\n\nWhat should I expect at the reception?\n\nWe hope you stay after the show to partake in the merriment of Purim; which will include\, drinks\, appetizers\, and activities! Costumes are encouraged!\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:A Taste of Shabbat

Enjoy sampling delicious Shabbat recipes\, from appetizers to dessert with Chef Tiffani as she demonstrates dishes that will impress any guests around the Shabbat table! Coastal Roots Farm’s Director of Jewish Life\, Rebecca Joy Fletcher\, will touch on what Jewish tradition teaches about the Sabbath dinner table and why inviting guests is such a mitzvah (good deed); then we will explore why setting a beautiful table can be so helpful\, and lastly\, how to prepare yourself for the transition into a different kind of time — into Shabbat time. \n\nTasting Menu – samples of the following: \n\nAppetizer: Local kale salad with roasted butternut squash and 24-hour pickled beets\, accompanied by an apple-cider vinaigrette\nMain: Catalina offshore white fish “en papillote” with seasonal vegetables\, thyme\, and citrus. Served alongside Persian basmati rice pilaf with cranberries\, sumac\, turmeric\, and slivered almonds\nDessert: Fall-time apple cobbler topped with a brown sugar oat crumble\n\nMeet Our Speakers: \nRebecca Joy Fletcher inaugurates the Director of Jewish Life position at Coastal Roots Farm. She is responsible for deepening and multiplying the Farm’s earth-based Judaism programs\, teachings\, and rituals in an open-hearted\, inquisitive\, and inclusive way.Her passion for Judaism\, creative expression and playfulness\, climate and food justice\, and embodied learning are at the root of every challenge she takes on. \nChef Tiffani Tincher has over 20 years of experience as a chef\, with her specialty as a pastry chef. SUMMARY:Havdalah on the Farm
DESCRIPTION:Havdalah\, literally meaning separation\, is a ritual held at the end of Shabbat\, after the sun has set and when three stars appear. There are blessings over wine\, a candle\, and spices. It is a ritual that allows us to hold onto the sweet moments of Shabbat for just a few more minutes before going into our busy week.

SUMMARY:Gratitude Harvest: A Shavuot Experience
DESCRIPTION:Please join the Hive and Coastal Roots Farm in a modern twist on ancient Shavuot tradition\, where we gather together to participate in a ritual that was practiced by Jewish farming communities on the eve of Shavuot. All we ask of you is to come with an open mind and heart\, and a willingness to partake in an unique experience called an “Amen Circle” with Chaya Gilboa\, Leichtag Foundation Director of Jewish Engagement – involving tasting special fruits\, bestowing blessings on loved ones\, and celebrating in community. If you have the following items in your home\, please bring them\, although they are not necessary to participate: fruit off a vine\, fruit off a tree\, a vegetable from the ground\, and something that is baked (cookie\, bread\, etc).\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAt the end of this ritual\, we will conclude with a virtual parade of our “first fruits.” Bring your own “first fruit\,” literal or figurative (think that new loaf of sourdough bread you just learned to bake\, your first strawberry of the season\, a new painting\, etc) and we will showcase them in a virtual parade.
