The MGSDII is a network of Israel Studies programs on San Diego campuses including UC San Diego (UCSD), San Diego State University (SDSU), CSU San Marcos (CSUSM), University of San Diego (USD) and Cal Western School of Law supported by a growing consortium of funders and the Leichtag Foundation. The programs include, or will include academic courses; lectures, Israel immersion experiences for students and faculty; visiting Israeli professors and postdocs; conferences and symposiums; and community education opportunities.
We envision a program that builds deep, diverse, academically rigorous Israel content and engagement across all campuses in San Diego.
Our goal is for students and faculty to emerge with more knowledge about Israel, its key successes and challenges, and its complexity. It will fill a real void on campuses and in the community by providing a spectrum of opportunities to connect San Diego to the State of Israel and its people from a variety of perspectives. Students who wish to think beyond slogans and sound bites are generally the primary target audience, and they are encouraged to make up their own minds based on informed views.
Investing in Israel Studies is an important way to affect knowledge and attitudes concerning Israel. By creating serious, educated, and balanced discourse, and by not shying away from Israel’s challenges and achievements, Israel Studies has a significant potential impact on the image of Israel that is different to, but on par with or exceeding, results of pro-Israel advocacy organizations.
