SUMMARY:Being Present in Movement: A Contact Improvisation Workshop with Edo Ceder
DESCRIPTION:This interactive movement workshop is an opportunity to explore the method of “contact improvisation” with celebrated Israeli dancer and choreographer Edo Ceder. Improvisation in movement provides the opportunity to move and enjoy our own body\, find stories inside\, collaborate with others\, and create art. In this workshop we will explore and experiment the power of movement within ourselves and community. \n  \nA Bit More About Edo: \nEdo has been practicing and studying Contact and Improvisation\, as well as contemporary dance since 1999\, and teaching since 2006. He taught CI in Tel Aviv\, New York (steps on broadway)\, the West Coast contact improvisation festival\, Jacksonville MFA dance program (a guest class) and Warsaw Zawirowania contemporary dance festival. For the past 5 years he has been holding weekly CI classes\, as well as Improvisation classes\, and hosting a monthly Jam at Naim Studio in Tel Aviv.   Since 2008 Edo has been dancing professionally and also choreographing contemporary dance pieces\, performing them in Germany\, China\, Israel\, U.S.A and Poland. His duet “Aproximity” has received 3rd prize and audience favorite award in Zawirowania dance competition\, Warsaw.   He completed 3 years of study of the somatic “Grinberg Method” and had worked with people in personal processes. He carries a 2nd degree black belt in Jujitsu and had taught children and adults. He holds a B.A. in Psychology and also works as a computer programmer.   “I look at CI as a practice and play with weight and the physical forces\, while at the same time honing skills of non-verbal communication\, presence\, attention\, opening of the heart\, collaboration and sharing\, and connection to self\, ground\, other.”

Palmer \nGamal Palmer grew up in West Mt. Airy\, Philadelphia\, a neighborhood characterized by uncommon racial and religious diversity. His parents were advocates for social change and his advocacy started early as he worked in a prison in 8th grade and became enthralled by theater and the power of storytelling\, particularly within the context of exploring identity and its overlapping elements. \nAs a graduate student at the Yale School of Drama\, he developed graduate-level programs focused on dialogue\, advocacy and community engagement around socio-political challenges in Swaziland and South Africa and Tanzania. \nSince then Gamal has designed and led programs in over 10 African countries\, Middle East\, and throughout the United States. Gamal is the Senior Vice President of Leadership Development at the Jewish Federation of Greater Los Angeles and facilitates workshops and presents keynotes of a myriad of topics that cover leadership\, diversity\, and entrepreneurship.

SUMMARY:"Our Boys" Conversation with Shuki Ben-Naim
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, December 12 | 7:00 p.m.\nThe Hive at Leichtag Commons \nGet a behind-the-scenes look at HBO’s hit series\, Our Boys\, with Shuki Ben-Naim\, the series’ screenwriter. Through the use of clips and in a facilitated conversation\, audience members will explore the dimensions and dynamics within and beyond Israel that were exposed by both the real-life events and the series. \nFilmed in Israel\, Our Boys demonstrates how popular culture can reflect and refract discourse and how narrative operates to make the lines between fact and fiction almost indistinguishable. In the summer of 2014\, three Jewish teenagers are kidnapped and murdered by Hamas militants. Israel is shocked\, shaken and furious. Two days later\, the burned body of a Palestinian teenager from eastern Jerusalem is found in a forest on the western outskirts of the city. In the ensuing days\, an agent from the internal terror division of the Shin Bet investigates the murder\, while the parents of the slain teenager begin their long and anguished journey toward justice and consolation. The fictional series based on these real events follows the investigation of Mohammed Abu Khdeir’s murder\, and tells the story of all those involved\, Jews and Arabs alike\, whose lives were forever changed by these events. \nShuki will converse with Chaya Gilboa\, a Jerusalemite civil society leader temporarily living in San Diego. Chaya experienced the 2014 events on the ground in Jerusalem and has connections to the victim families on both sides. The discussion will be moderated by Charlene Seidle who helped lead the development of the Jerusalem Unity Prize which is an annual award presented by the parents of the three Israeli boys in their memory. \nThe conversation will include a frank discussion on how the series was received in Israel including condemnation by many government officials as well as the parents of the three Jewish teenagers who were murdered. \nShuki is a Murray Galinson San Diego Israel-Initiative Visiting Scholar. He is teaching screenwriting at San Diego State University.

DESCRIPTION:There has been an increasing spotlight on creating a safe\, equitable\, and respectful workplace culture. The law mandates training on identifying and reporting sexual harassment\, but often the role and responsibility of the bystander isn’t addressed. In this workshop participants will:\n\n\n\nDefine “diffusion of responsibility” and why it’s important to stand up for fellow colleagues.\nIdentify potentially harmful interactions along a continuum of behaviors.\nDefine the “Direct\, Distract\, Delay\, Delegate” model for choosing how to intervene when intervention is necessary.\nUnderstand barriers to using bystander intervention and develop solutions to overcome them.\nPractice applying bystander intervention tools in a variety of different scenarios.\n\nAbout Ashley Goldstein \nAshley Goldstein\, founder of Goldtree Training has nearly twenty years of training design and delivery experience in the government\, corporate\, education and non-profit sectors.  From 2013 to 2018\, Ashley served as the primary designer of the United States Peace Corps’ Sexual Assault Risk Reduction and Response Training Program reaching thousands of learners in over sixty countries.  Originally from California\, Ashley’s most meaningful life experiences come from living in other cultures.  She taught English in Spain for several years and was a Peace Corps Volunteer in Zambia\, Southern Africa. Ashley graduated from UC Santa Barbara with a degree in Global Studies and holds a Masters in International Education and Human Development from George Washington University in Washington\, D.C. \n​

DESCRIPTION:Storytelling is at the core of human communication. It’s how we process thoughts\, connect with each other\, and understand the world.  \nStorytelling is an especially important tool for nonprofits. By using storytelling to communicate the value of the work they do\, organizations can connect with their audience in a way that will emotionally resonate and inspire them to action. Organizations that ingrain a culture of storytelling into everything they do will see stronger fundraising\, decreased turnover\, and overall greater effectiveness towards their mission. \nJoin in with the Hive as we partner with Nathan Young of Greater Good Storytelling to present a series of storytelling workshops aimed specifically at nonprofits and nonprofit professionals to help them better understand and utilize storytelling in their daily work. \nDates: March 4th 9-11 am; March 25th 9-11 am; April 22nd 9-11 am \n\nCost: $75 for series\, individual classes not for sale \n*We believe the arc of this workshop series will provide a complete learning experience and therefore offer only one registration fee for the entire series. However\, if you can’t make all three courses but are still interested in the content of those you can attend\, you are welcome to register and just participate in those you can. \nSession 1: Understanding Storytelling for Nonprofit Communication\nStorytelling is a buzzworthy tool for nonprofits\, but what are we actually talking about when we say “storytelling” and how do we make our stories effective? This workshop will go over the basics of storytelling\, helping nonprofits professionals understand the elements of powerful storytelling and how to implement them in their professional lives. We’ll break down storytelling into its component parts and walk participants through a step-by-step process of seeing\, understanding\, and sharing the stories that exemplify the important work of their organization. \nSession 2: Finding and Leveraging Important Organizational Stories\nImportant stories happen every day at a nonprofit but how can organizations find good stories and put them to work? This workshop will give participants the tools and strategies to identify and capture stories as they happen and creating a culture of sharing these stories for internal team building and growth\, or externally outreach communication. These stories will provide nonprofits with a wealth of important communication material for development\, marketing\, team building\, empathy generating\, and more. \nSession 3: Adapting Stories for Multiple Platforms\nTo capture the attention of their audience\, nonprofits need to meet them where they are. That can include everything from a website\, social media presence\, public relations\, direct mail\, employee relationships\, and more. This workshop will cover how nonprofits can adapt their stories to multiple mediums to get the most mileage for their communication. \n\n\nFor over eight years\, Nathan Young has been helping individuals and organizations connect with their audience through storytelling. He’s worked with such organizations as TEDxSanDiego\, the YMCA\, UC San Diego\, and more. His focus is on storytelling because it has the ability to foster connection and inspire action in a way no other medium can provide. Join Sharon for a guided tour of his photo exhibit which features street photographs taken in Jerusalem that demonstrate the human diversity\, co-existence\, and the everyday people who are building a wonderful texture of peace in a complex city. The evening will conclude with a dynamic discussion between Sharon and Dr. Marik Shtern\, UCSD Professor of Urban Planning\, and will be moderated by Leichtag Foundation’s Director of Jewish Engagement Chaya Gilboa about both the historical and present social dynamics in the city of Jerusalem through a photographic lens.
