DESCRIPTION:What’s your story? How do our stories affect who we’ve been\, who we are\, and who we’re becoming? Join us for a special storytelling Shabbat gathering with Aaron Henne\, artistic director of theatre dybbuk\, as he takes us on a journey through our own individual and communal narratives which illuminate the past as well as the here and now. \nThis Shabbat takes place during Jewish American Heritage Month and the period between Passover and Shavuot\, when we are on a path toward greater understanding and connection to ourselves and our world. Our delicious menu will fuse dishes of the Jewish diaspora with American culinary staples! \nGuests will have the choice to purchase a table (up to six guests) for their own pod\, or sit at a community table to make new friends (register soon – we can only honor GF and vegan dietary preferences submitted by Monday\, May 16th)! \nBecause this event is centered around a meal\, we are requiring that all guests be fully vaccinated and show proof upon entry (either virtual QR code or the physical card in-hand). We also encourage our guests to get boosted. We are capping the event at 30 guests. \nPlease email Paige Milgrom-Hills if you have additional questions or need support. \n  \nMeet Our Speaker: \nAaron Henne is the Artistic Director of theatre dybbuk\, an arts and education organization whose work illuminates universal human experience from a Jewish perspective. In addition to his work with theatre dybbuk\, Aaron teaches storytelling throughout the country and has presented workshops at Lucasfilm\, Pixar\, and Dreamworks. With Hebrew Union College – Jewish Institute of Religion\, he has been faculty for the EMA program\, was the Diane Luboff Scholar at the Cutter Colloquium\, and is a part of Beit HaYotzer/the Creativity Braintrust.  Aaron has also served as a professional mentor at Otis College of Art and Design and as faculty for the Wexner Heritage Program\, as well as for Georgetown University. He has worked as an educator and facilitator for a wide variety of organizations including The Hive at Leichtag Commons\, Jewish Federation of North America’s Young Leadership Cabinet\, and The Bronfman Fellowship. Mr. Henne is a Pilot Wexner Field Fellow\, a member of the ROI community\, and the recipient of LA Weekly and SF Bay Area Theatre Critics Circle Awards for Playwriting.

DESCRIPTION:JPro San Diego invites you to join Ilana Kaufman\, Executive Director and Arya Marvazy\, Senior Director of Programs of the Jews of Color Initiative in a presentation of their critical research “Beyond the Count: Perspectives and Lived Experiences of Jews of Color.” The Jews of Color Initiative works to build a truly multiracial\, anti-racist Jewish community in which Jews of Color can experience joy and reach their full potential and belonging as leaders and community members. \nThis report uses survey and interview data of a complex fabric of JoC identities\, lived experiences\, and perspectives. In the context of the national conversation about race in the United States\, this study enhances American Jews’ understanding of their own racial and ethnic diversity and provides an opportunity to reflect on how systems of inequality are perpetuated in our own community. We look forward to engaging in a robust conversation about the key takeaways and implications for own San Diego Jewish Community. \n\n\nThere will be an opportunity to attend both in-person or via Zoom. For those attending in-person\, there is an optional lunch after the program – a vegan Green Goddess Bowl for $10.\n\n\nMeet Our Presenters: \n\nIlana Kaufman (she/her) is the Executive Director of the Jews of Color Initiative. Her work sits at the center of Jewish community\, racial equity\, and justice\, is anchored by the voices and experience of Jews of Color\, and is focused on grantmaking\, research and field building\, and community education. \nAs a guest on NPR’s All Things Considered and Code Switch\, with pieces featured in eJewish Philanthropy and The Foundation Review\, and an Eli Talk titled Who Counts\, Race and the Jewish Future with over 36\,000 views\, Ilana is passionate about all things at the intersection of Jewish community\, racial justice\, Jews of Color\, education\, and philanthropy. \nIlana was previously the Public Affairs and Civic Engagement Director\, East Bay for the San Francisco\, Bay Area Jewish Community Relations Council. \nA Senior Schusterman Fellow who is always searching Jewish text for discussion of equity and justice\, Ilana received her B.A. in Sociology from California State University-Humboldt and her M.A. in Educational Pedagogy from Mills College. \n\n\n Arya Marvazy (he/him) is the Senior Director of Programs of the Jews of Color Initiative. He is a first-generation American born to Iranian-Jewish immigrants from Tehran. For nearly 15 years\, Arya has cultivated his leadership in Jewish communal service at Hillel on campus\, Hillel International\, and JQ International. A proud queer Jew who is passionate about empowering diverse Jewish identity\, enriching equitable Jewish community\, and ensuring inclusive pathways toward Jewish continuity\, Arya has also served as a lay leader with other Jewish orgs including JDC Entwine\, JPro\, AJC\, Schusterman’s ROI community\, and others. \nArya earned his B.A. in psychology at the University of California San Diego\, and an M.A. in organizational behavior at New York University.

Don’t miss an entertaining afternoon\, including original performances from San Diego Ballet and vignettes curated by the San Diego Repertory Theatre! \nTickets are Pay-What-You-Can\, valued at $18/person\, with a special ticket price for the last showing \nFAQs: \n\nWhat is Purim?\n\nPurim is a joyous holiday that affirms and celebrates Jewish survival and continuity throughout history. Traditionally\, Purim is celebrated by reading the Book of Esther (m’gillat Esther) which tells the story of the holiday. Our story begins in Shushan\, an ancient city in Persia\, now Iran\, 160 miles from the Tigris River. Under the rule of King Ahashverosh\, Haman\, the king’s adviser\, plots to exterminate all of the Jews of Persia. His plan is foiled by Queen Esther and her cousin Mordechai\, who ultimately save the Jews of Persia from destruction. The reading of the Purim story is often a raucous environment with cheers and boos and lots of celebrating. We have reinvented the telling of the Purim story through a series of performances that you will experience in a lively walking tour setting.\n\n\nHow does Pay-What-You-Can work?\n\nOur number one priority is keeping these experiences open and accessible to all who want to attend. Admission is “valued at x/person” because that is what we would charge in a traditional sales structure. We encourage you to pay whatever amount feels comfortable for you. Some participants choose to “pay it forward” and pay over the suggested price to cover those who can’t. Regardless of the amount you contribute\, we are so excited to have you join us on this stroll thru Shushan!\n\n\nHow long is the program?\n\nYou should plan on the designed experiences taking approximately 45 minutes from the time of your scheduled arrival. A post-show gathering is available for those who would like to stay after each performance.\n\n\nWhat do I need to bring and what should I leave at home?\n\nWe encourage you to wear a good pair of walking shoes as we will be experiencing Shushan by foot this year. Accommodations can be made for those who are not able to walk for the entirety of the experience. Due to the organic status of our farm\, no animals are allowed on the property.\n\n\nIs the program appropriate for children?\n\nThis program was designed for an adult audience. While there is not any inappropriate content in the experience\, the theatrical dialogue was created for adults.\n\n\nWhat safety protocols will you have in place?\n\nThe safety of our participants\, staff\, and actors is our number one priority. All patrons\, including children\, must be either fully vaccinated according to CDC standards (at least 14 days have passed since the final dose)\, or proof of a negative COVID-19 test taken in the prior 24-hours (home tests accepted). All guests will be required to show proof of vaccination status or negative test at check-in. Outdoor masking will be determined at the time of the event\, based on CDC and state guidelines.\n\n\nWhat if I arrive early or late from my original registration time?\n\nThis experience includes elements of live theatre performance and therefore on-time arrival is key for the optimal show experience. There are limited spaces available during each time slot. If you arrive early\, you will be asked to wait in a holding area until your showtime. If you arrive late\, you will be asked to wait in a holding area until the next available opening.\n\n\nWhy does the last show cost more?\n\nThe last show includes a special extended reception to partake in the merriment of Purim; which will include live music\, wine tasting\, appetizers\, and a meet-and-greet with the cast and crew!

This session will dive into your asking fears while providing practical steps all aimed at positioning you for success.    \nTickets are pay-what-you-can\, valued at $12/person. \n Meet the presenters:  \nJeanne Schmelzer serves as executive vice president for Netzel Grigsby Associates (NGA) where she provides strategic fundraising solutions to nonprofit organizations and institutions throughout California. With more than 40 years of experience\, Jeanne is passionate about helping nonprofits reach their highest potential and is committed to making a positive and lasting impact in the communities she serves.\nAt NGA\, Jeanne manages and implements successful multi-million-dollar capital campaigns\, annual campaigns\, and major gift fundraising programs for a diverse range of clients. Recent projects include the Big Sur Land Trust ($7 million campaign)\, Boys & Girls Clubs of the Olympic Peninsula\, Washington ($6.5 million campaign) TheatreWorks Silicon Valley ($5 million campaign) and Diversionary Theatre\, San Diego ($2.5 million campaign). She also has extensive experience in board and staff development\, fiscal management\, long-range strategic planning\, facility and program development\, marketing and communications.\nJeanne is a Certified Fundraising Executive (CFRE) and has been an active Rotarian since 1991. She is a past board member of AFP San Diego and currently serves as the treasurer on the North County Philanthropy Council Board and YMCA Alumni Board of the Marston Chapter as Campaign Chair for the Nation Service Project.  \nSharyn Goodson has over 25 years of experience in philanthropy\, program design and delivery\, organizational development\, and nonprofit fundraising. Sharyn currently serves as Vice President of Philanthropy for both Impact Cubed and Leichtag Foundation where she manages grantmaking\, leads funder partnerships\, and trains and counsels nonprofits on revenue generation\, board and organizational development\, as well as program design and evaluation. Sharyn holds the Certified Fundraising Executive (CFRE) credential and currently serves on the Steering Committee for the Alliance for Regional Solutions.\nIn April 2010\, Sharyn joined the Leichtag Foundation as its first Program Officer. DESCRIPTION:The story of Purim weaves together themes of hidden identity\, togetherness\, and stepping into your power. Taking place in Shushan\, the ancient city in Persia\, Purim can be a festive and empowering celebration for all. Join us for an experiential Shabbat evening infused with Persian flavor\, and learning from our esteemed guests\, Arya Marvazy and The Empress Mizrahi! Together\, they’ll help us explore how we might apply Purim’s theme of finding ourselves through our own disguises to step into our authenticity. \nTo complement the experience and celebrate an aspect of Purim – costumes – all attendees are invited to show up in attire reflecting the theme “Come as your true self!” Though there is no pressure to participate! \nGuests will have the choice to purchase a table (up to six guests) for their own pod\, or sit at a community table to make new friends (register soon – we can only honor GF and vegan dietary preferences submitted by Monday\, March 7th)! \nBecause this event is centered around a meal\, we are requiring that all guests be fully vaccinated and show proof upon entry (either virtual QR code or the physical card in-hand). We also encourage our guests to get boosted. In recent years\, The Empress Mizrahi has been using their voice to passionately advocate and fight for the causes they believe in\, namely LGBTQ+ rights and equality within the Iranian and Jewish communities\, and combating antisemitism. They have taken on leadership roles with both queer and non queer organizations such as JDC Entwine\, JQ International\, Tel Aviv Institute as a Digital Producer\, and most recently joined the team at JIMENA – Jews Indigenous to the Middle East and N orth Africa. In 2021 they were the recipient of the TrailBlazer Award at the JQ International annual Impact Awards. \nArya Marvazy\,\nCommunity Organizer\, Activist\, & Educator\nArya (he/him) is a first-generation American born to Iranian-Jewish immigrants from Tehran. For nearly 15 years\, Arya has cultivated his leadership in Jewish communal service at Hillel on campus\, Hillel International\, and JQ International. A proud queer Jew who is passionate about empowering diverse Jewish identity\, enriching equitable Jewish community\, and ensuring inclusive pathways toward Jewish continuity\, Arya has also served as a lay leader with other Jewish orgs including JDC Entwine\, JPro\, AJC\, Schusterman’s ROI community\, and others. He currently serves as the Senior Director of Programs at the Jews of Color Initiative.\nArya earned his B.A. in psychology at the University of California San Diego\, and an M.A. in organizational behavior at New York University. \n

DESCRIPTION:At One Safe Place\, a team of community partners and volunteers will provide confidential\, comprehensive services free of charge to anyone who has experienced domestic violence\, family violence\, elder abuse\, sexual assault\, or sex trafficking\, regardless of age\, gender\, income\, and immigration status. The Center will be a safe space where individual needs are met\, clients feel validated\, families are protected\, and survivors reclaim their lives. Read more about the Center here.\n\nClients will be connected to acute crisis-care\, advocacy\, childcare\, counseling\, educational and employment opportunities\, legal services\, and shelter and housing. \n \nDid you know?\n\n1 in 4 women and 1 in 9 men have been victims of partner violence\, which occurs as frequently in same-sex as in heterosexual relationships.\n1 in 11 female and 1 in 14 male high school students have experienced dating violence.\n16 years old is San Diego County’s average sex trafficking coercion age\, with 8\,000+ victims every year. At $800 million\, the illicit sex economy is our second largest underground economy.\n35% of women killed by men are killed by intimate partners with guns.\n60% of mass shootings 2014-2019 were linked to domestic violence.\n\nOur speakers: \nSan Diego County District Attorney Summer Stephan has devoted her life to protecting children and families\, providing justice to the most vulnerable\, and is a national leader in the fight against human trafficking and sexual exploitation. Summer is focused on advancing public safety through fair and equal justice\, bringing solutions to complex issues with a unique data-driven\, commonsense approach that works to address the root causes of certain crimes driven by mental illness and addiction. As District Attorney\, she leads the second-largest DA’s Office in California\, managing a professional staff of 1\,000 employees\, serving as the People’s Prosecutor for San Diego County and its more than three million residents. \nChief Deputy District Attorney Tracy Prior has been a prosecutor for 25 years where she has tried over 75 cases to verdict including rape\, child physical abuse\, several multiple-victim child molestation\, vehicular manslaughter\, arson\, and several murder cases including one Domestic Violence capital case.  After specializing in Domestic Violence and Child Abuse misdemeanor cases at the San Diego City Attorney’s Office Tracy joined the San Diego District Attorney’s Office where she prosecuted general crimes in North County and then joined the Family Protection Division\, specializing in Domestic Violence\, Child Abuse and Elder Abuse cases.
