DESCRIPTION:Join us for a 5-session series as we use Jewish text and tradition as guides to explore contemporary issues facing women around the world. Although our ancient texts were written centuries ago\, what insight\, guidance\, and perspective can they offer on topics such as divorce\, sexuality\, and infertility? The classes will be opportunities to learn together\, but also will foster interactive discussion where each participant brings her own identity and perspective to the conversation. \nThis class is for women\, or anyone who identifies as a woman. We encourage you to come for all 5 sessions to get the full experience\, but individual class passes are also available. Sweet treats and refreshments will be served. \n  \n\nClasses are facilitated by Chaya Gilboa\, Leichtag Foundation’s Director of Jewish Engagement. Chaya is responsible for Jewish integration and education across all entities at Leichtag Commons with an emphasis on: The Hive at Leichtag Commons\, Coastal Roots Farm and the Leichtag Foundation. \nChaya was born in Jerusalem to an ultra-Orthodox family. Her B.A. in Jewish Philosophy from Ben Gurion University (2008) was followed by a stint as a Hillel International Israel Fellow at Berkeley University and an M.A. in Public Policy from Hebrew University (2013)\, where she wrote her thesis on Haredi women\, religion and state. In 2012\, she was scholar-in-residence at the Paideia Institute in Sweden\, where she taught Talmud and established an educators’ track. \nIn 2014\, Chaya became Founding Director of Hevruta\, a pluralistic\, integrated gap-year program for Israeli and North American post-high school students at the Hartman Institute. Chaya is committed to creating alternatives within the realm of religion and state\, establishing Hashgacha Pratit\, an alternative kashrut system and active in crafting egalitarian wedding ceremonies and other initiatives that combine feminism and Jewish identity. Chaya is the mother of Michael and Avshalom and partner to Marek.

This was Naomi’s greatest strength and source of pride. \nThis celebration will be a restorative\, festive time for those of us working to build vibrant Jewish community to get a taste of that “woo” and learn to embody it\, too. A little “woo” will go a long way to create dynamic\, engaging\, and fresh programs to win over our community. “Woo” is what will make our community members feel welcome and excited for Jewish experiences. \nOur festivities will open with a made-for-Jewish-communal-professionals text study that will reflect Naomi’s values and vibrant personality led by Leichtag Commons Director of Jewish Engagement Chaya Gilboa. \nWe will spark inspiration and connection through one of Naomi’s favorite outlets – singing together. SUMMARY:Yom Hashoah: A Holocaust Remembrance through the Arts
DESCRIPTION:The Jewish calendar designates a sacred day\, Yom HaShoah\, to pause and remember the victims of the Holocaust. As our beloved survivors of the Holocaust age\, we cherish every opportunity to hear their stories firsthand and commit to pass along their legacies and lessons to the next generation. Please join us for an evening as we learn from local survivor and artist Ruth Platner and view her enlightening art collection on display in our Farm House gallery. Channel your creativity and rememberance with The Butterfly Project by painting a ceramic butterfly in commemoration of a child who perished in the Holocaust that will be put on permanent display in The Hive. You will also hear from the Anti-Defamation League about how their No Place for Hate program strives to support anti-bias and bullying interventions on school campuses across the country. The evening will include light refreshments and poetry\, art\, and reflections. \n7:00 PM View gallery\, butterfly painting\, mix and mingle\n7:30 PM Program officially begins with sunset and poetry readings \n  \nMore about Ruth Platner: Ruth grew up in Germany during the travesty of World War II and the Nazi regime. When bombs fell\, she and her parents were not allowed into the bomb shelters. They lived in the attic of a family’s home in constant fear of being discovered. Ruth remembers her mother panicking each time footsteps were heard on the stairs\, hiding herself and her daughter in a closet. Fortunately they were not found before Nazi Germany fell. \nRuth’s solace\, even as a child came through art and when she was finally free to pursue an education. She applied and was accepted to the prestigious Hamburg Art Institute where she studied graphics and painting. \nIn 1949 she met and married Fred Platner also a survivor of the Holocaust and eventually settled Wausau\, Wisconsin. In 1978 Ruth relocated to Carlsbad\, California and earned a Master’s Degree in Educational Technology. \nRuth has participated with the Oceanside Museum of Art. She started and ran the associated Oceanside Museum of Art\, School of Art. Until recently\, Ruth volunteered her time and expertise at the Vista Jail\, teaching incarcerated veterans a program designed by her\, based on her published book titled “Meditation and Art”. She also authored an autobiography titled “War and Pieces”. According to Ruth\, her art is “an expression of being in the process of investigation of the essence of life and its meaning on a personal\, spiritual and universal level.”

DESCRIPTION:This interactive movement workshop is an opportunity to explore the method of “contact improvisation” with celebrated Israeli dancer and choreographer Edo Ceder. Improvisation in movement provides the opportunity to move and enjoy our own body\, find stories inside\, collaborate with others\, and create art. In this workshop we will explore and experiment the power of movement within ourselves and community. \n  \nA Bit More About Edo: \nEdo has been practicing and studying Contact and Improvisation\, as well as contemporary dance since 1999\, and teaching since 2006. He taught CI in Tel Aviv\, New York (steps on broadway)\, the West Coast contact improvisation festival\, Jacksonville MFA dance program (a guest class) and Warsaw Zawirowania contemporary dance festival. For the past 5 years he has been holding weekly CI classes\, as well as Improvisation classes\, and hosting a monthly Jam at Naim Studio in Tel Aviv.   Since 2008 Edo has been dancing professionally and also choreographing contemporary dance pieces\, performing them in Germany\, China\, Israel\, U.S.A and Poland. His duet “Aproximity” has received 3rd prize and audience favorite award in Zawirowania dance competition\, Warsaw.   He completed 3 years of study of the somatic “Grinberg Method” and had worked with people in personal processes. He carries a 2nd degree black belt in Jujitsu and had taught children and adults. He holds a B.A. in Psychology and also works as a computer programmer.   “I look at CI as a practice and play with weight and the physical forces\, while at the same time honing skills of non-verbal communication\, presence\, attention\, opening of the heart\, collaboration and sharing\, and connection to self\, ground\, other.”

Palmer \nGamal Palmer grew up in West Mt. Airy\, Philadelphia\, a neighborhood characterized by uncommon racial and religious diversity. His parents were advocates for social change and his advocacy started early as he worked in a prison in 8th grade and became enthralled by theater and the power of storytelling\, particularly within the context of exploring identity and its overlapping elements. \nAs a graduate student at the Yale School of Drama\, he developed graduate-level programs focused on dialogue\, advocacy and community engagement around socio-political challenges in Swaziland and South Africa and Tanzania. \nSince then Gamal has designed and led programs in over 10 African countries\, Middle East\, and throughout the United States. Gamal is the Senior Vice President of Leadership Development at the Jewish Federation of Greater Los Angeles and facilitates workshops and presents keynotes of a myriad of topics that cover leadership\, diversity\, and entrepreneurship.

DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, December 12 | 7:00 p.m.\nThe Hive at Leichtag Commons \nGet a behind-the-scenes look at HBO’s hit series\, Our Boys\, with Shuki Ben-Naim\, the series’ screenwriter. Through the use of clips and in a facilitated conversation\, audience members will explore the dimensions and dynamics within and beyond Israel that were exposed by both the real-life events and the series. \nFilmed in Israel\, Our Boys demonstrates how popular culture can reflect and refract discourse and how narrative operates to make the lines between fact and fiction almost indistinguishable. In the summer of 2014\, three Jewish teenagers are kidnapped and murdered by Hamas militants. Israel is shocked\, shaken and furious. Two days later\, the burned body of a Palestinian teenager from eastern Jerusalem is found in a forest on the western outskirts of the city. In the ensuing days\, an agent from the internal terror division of the Shin Bet investigates the murder\, while the parents of the slain teenager begin their long and anguished journey toward justice and consolation. The fictional series based on these real events follows the investigation of Mohammed Abu Khdeir’s murder\, and tells the story of all those involved\, Jews and Arabs alike\, whose lives were forever changed by these events. \nShuki will converse with Chaya Gilboa\, a Jerusalemite civil society leader temporarily living in San Diego. Chaya experienced the 2014 events on the ground in Jerusalem and has connections to the victim families on both sides. The discussion will be moderated by Charlene Seidle who helped lead the development of the Jerusalem Unity Prize which is an annual award presented by the parents of the three Israeli boys in their memory. \nThe conversation will include a frank discussion on how the series was received in Israel including condemnation by many government officials as well as the parents of the three Jewish teenagers who were murdered. \nShuki is a Murray Galinson San Diego Israel-Initiative Visiting Scholar. He is teaching screenwriting at San Diego State University.
